Hi, I’m Nina Walder, and welcome to the Business Mindset Style Podcast. This is a show for women in business who want to make an impact, grow a profitable online business, and live a fulfilling life of freedom and creativity. I’ll be sharing my lessons, insights, mistakes, and behind-the-scenes stories about running a digital business, growing on social media, and building a strong personal brand.
In today’s episode, we’re diving into visual branding and how to use color strategically to strengthen your personal brand. Let’s get started!
The Power of Visual Branding
Some people message me on Instagram saying I wear too much pink. But those who understand branding and marketing know that it’s intentional—not a coincidence.
In the last episode, I shared how I grew my Instagram following to over 300,000 followers. However, there’s a huge difference between having a large audience and building a strong personal brand. You’ve probably seen influencers with hundreds of thousands, even millions of followers, launch a product—and then… crickets. That’s because a big audience doesn’t automatically mean trust, engagement, or sales.
A strong personal brand ensures that people listen, trust, and buy from you. One of the best ways to create that brand is through intentional style. And this isn’t just for stylists, designers, or creatives. Whether you’re in psychology, public speaking, finance, coaching, consulting, or even working a 9-to-5, your style plays a crucial role in how you present yourself—especially online.
Today, we’ll talk about one of the most powerful elements of visual branding: color.
Why Style Matters on Instagram
Did you know that 80% of communication is nonverbal? And that 90% of nonverbal communication comes from clothing and grooming? Before people hear your message or understand what you stand for, they see you—and in that split second, they form a first impression.
On Instagram, where people are constantly scrolling, your visuals need to grab attention instantly. Most users watch videos without sound, meaning your style, colors, and visual identity must communicate your brand before they even listen to you. If you’re not memorable, you’ll struggle to grow your audience and establish trust.
Using Color to Build a Recognizable Brand
One of the easiest ways to make yourself instantly recognizable is through a signature color.
For me, that color is fuchsia pink. People often tell me, “Nina, you wear so much pink!”—and that’s intentional. But let me explain why I chose this specific shade of pink.
The psychology behind pink:
- Pink represents compassion, nurturing, and love.
- It combines the passion and energy of red with the purity and openness of white.
- Fuchsia pink, a more saturated and mature shade of pink, conveys confidence, passion, and energy.
This nuance matters. For example, blue is often associated with trust and credibility, which is why many big corporations use it. But baby blue, navy blue, and cobalt blue each evoke different emotions. Similarly, a light pink may feel too girly, while fuchsia pink has more depth and sophistication.
Over time, my audience has built such a strong association with fuchsia pink that they now call it “Nina Pink”. I receive messages like:
- “I saw a store selling fuchsia items, and I immediately thought of you!”
- “I saw a new collection in fuchsia and thought, ‘That’s Nina’s color!’”
That’s the power of brand consistency. When people associate a color with your name and expertise, you become truly unforgettable.
How to Use Color in Your Branding
Your brand color shouldn’t just appear in your clothing—it should be part of your entire visual identity. Here’s how I use fuchsia pink throughout my branding:
✔ Instagram Stories & Text – I use fuchsia as a highlight color in my captions, underlines, and arrows. ✔ Web Design – My website and sales pages incorporate the exact shade of fuchsia for consistency. ✔ Presentation Slides & Webinars – My slides use fuchsia to emphasize key points. ✔ Social Media Graphics – My content design includes fuchsia elements to maintain brand identity.
To build your own recognizable brand, think about which color(s) represent your energy, values, and style. And remember—it’s not just about choosing a color; the shade you pick makes a big difference.
Beyond Color: Other Signature Branding Elements
Besides color, you can make yourself more memorable through other visual branding elements, such as:
✔ Signature Accessories – Think about Mel Robbins' black-framed glasses. They’re part of her brand identity! ✔ Statement Jewelry – An interior designer I follow always wears chunky earrings. I may not remember her name, but I recognize her by those earrings! ✔ Consistent Backgrounds – I designed my recording setup with a gold clothing rack and colorful blazers, which reinforces my image as a color expert and stylist. ✔ Distinctive Outfits – Repeatedly wearing certain items, like bold blazers, scarves, or unique eyewear, helps create a recognizable image.
Ask yourself: What could be YOUR signature visual element?
Your Background Matters, Too!
Your background setup is another overlooked but important aspect of your brand. While a plain white wall is fine, a thoughtfully designed background can reinforce your expertise. However, it should never be too distracting—YOU should always be the focus.
For example, my gold clothing rack with colorful blazers is carefully placed behind me. It tells my audience: “She’s a stylist. She works with color. She’s polished and professional.” It subtly reinforces my brand without competing for attention.
If you create video content, consider:
- A clean, professional background with a few strategic elements.
- A color scheme that matches your brand.
- Avoiding overly busy or distracting backgrounds.
